The tragedy occurred when President Ebrahim Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. The helicopter’s subsequent hard landing occurred near the town of Julfa, which borders Azerbaijan, about 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of Iran’s capital, Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province and other officials and bodyguards were also traveling with Raisi, according to the news agency.
