According to a report by Mothership, Maashii explained to Hint-pot that the phenomenon is referred to in Japan as “Isaribi Kochu.” This term, which translates to “fish-attracting light pillars,” was highlighted by Japan Today in an article about a similar sighting back in 2015.
Japan Today elaborated that “Isaribi” literally means “fishing fires” and refers to the lights placed on fishing boats to attract larger catches, a practice commonly used in squid fishing. As the night air cools, crystals can form above the illuminated fishing boats. If the conditions are ideal for the formation of large crystals without precipitation, the beams can form as light from the boats reflects off the crystals.
